- Description
The return-to-service mission for the heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA is now targeted for January 2005. Details of Arianespace's new launch planning were provided last week by CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall in Paris. The mission will be the first for a heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA version after the launcher's unsuccessful maiden flight in December 2002.
Today's programme is looking at work that has been done for improving the Vulcan 2 cryogenic engine, including a full-scale test firing filmed in Vernon in France. The Vulcan 2 engine is one of the main improvements of the Ariane 5 ECA compared to the current generic Ariane 5 launcher.
The programme includes an A-roll of six minutes (split audio - English voiceover) and a B-roll with clean international sound.VULCAN 2 ? Ariane 5 Engine

SNECMA MOTEURSÓ, the company that has been producing engines for EuropeÕs
Ariane launchers for decades.
It is here that the Vulcan 1 engine of the generic Ariane 5 launcher was born.
It's known as a cryogenic engine because it burns a mix of liquid hydrogen and
oxygen, forming water vapour and releasing highly concentrated energy pushing
Ariane 5 up into space.
