Images of Venus (full planet, fly-by surface, cut to Venus Express launch preparations)
Venus is our nearest planetary neighbour, yet no spacecraft has been there for 15 years. The planet is almost identical to Earth in size, but the two have little else in common. It was Mars that captivated the world, whilst Venus remained a relatively forgotten planet. Now, the European Space Agency ESA is about to unlock more of its mysteries. Its new spacecraft Venus Express, will be launched on a Soyuz, Russia's most reliable rocket launcher, on the morning of 26th October from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

What we don't know yet very well is the total atmospheric composition and dynamics of the atmosphere, and particularly the interaction of the atmosphere with the surface. With the spectrometers on board Venus Express we'll be aSHOT LIST
