Galileo Update December 2005
This year, every European is going to get a very special Christmas present. The launch of Giove, scheduled for 26 December, will mark the inauguration of Galileo, Europeís own satellite navigation system. Like Americaís GPS, Galileo is a worldwide system. Unlike GPS, however, itís a civilian system with a service guarantee, which is fundamental for commercial services and competition on the global market for satellite navigation. It will also be compatible with GPS. (Images of Giove development in ESTEC, then launch animation - just one satellite in orbit. Cut to use of GPS terminal in driving car in Paris :) Navigation satellites transmit timing signals of extreme precision. These enable anybody with a small cheap receiver to determine his or her position on the globe, or the direction of a moving object. The accuracy is one metre, or even less.
