For twenty years , TV weather shows have used ""Meteosat"" images, making this one of the world's best-known satellites. Now, yet another of Europe's weather watchers, actually number nine, is ready for launch, scheduled for 21 December.
This launch is important because Meteosat images are still the bread and butter of TV weather forecasting. Black-and-white still images have been replaced with sophisticated computer graphics. But weather forecasting is no longer limited to television and the morning papers. We see it when we are online, we can tailor it to where we live, and when we are on the move we can even get forecasts sent to our mobile phone. But although we are literally flooded with weather information, the weather it still the same.
