- Description
ESA's Venus Express Probe will arrive at the Shepherd's star on Tuesday 11 April at around 07:00 GMT. Putting the spacecraft into an orbit around venus needs a one-hour burn of the main engine to decelerate it enough so that Venus' gravity can capture it: an operation that is not without risk, and during which radiocommand of Venus Express is not possible.

A-Roll
10:00:36 (Graphics Venus Express) After a flawless journey across nearly 300 million kilometres of space, the European Space Agencyís Venus Express probe is close to its final destination. But the greatest challenge still lies ahead At twenty-one minutes past 7 GMT on April 11th, the spacecraft will need to use its main engine for nearly one hour to slow down and enter an orbit around Venus. For this critical manoeuvre, precise timing will be crucial.
10:01:01 SOT Don McCoy, Venus Express Project Manager: ""If we donít get the thrust out of the engine for a sufficient time we basically miss the planet...what will happen is we stay in orbit around the sun, a slightly modified orbit from the one we approached, and in that case we have a possible contingency depending on the various situations ñ whether it was no burn at all or partial burn ñ we can possibly try to recover it for an eventual return to Venus but itís unfortunately a very long time,
