TC 10 00 40 Chilbolton Observatory, UK 12 January 2006 ñ Chilbolton Observatory, United Kingdom: this large antenna is receiving signals transmitted by GIOVE A, the first Galileo satellite! Itís an historic moment: Galileo signals are passing through space for the very first time. Galileo is now becoming a reality and the European Space Agency has begun the construction of a civil system with a global purpose.

But Galileo must proceed in stages: first the new technology must be tested ñ this is the aim of the current phase. With GIOVE A, for example, accurate atomic clocks and an innovative signal generator are being put through their paces. It is possible to calibrate not only the signals emitted on orbit but also the instruments responsible for receiving them on the ground ñ in fact to test out the entire system.
