Earth Climate and Space Weather
ESA TV Exchanges
On 6 April 2007, the contribution of Working Group II to the ""Climate Change 2007"" assessment report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) will be presented to the press in Brussels.
This is why ESA TV Service releases three new Exchanges on aspects of climate change and space - this is the second of the three stories:
Although climate change is number one on the news agenda, it's not new on Earth. Today's story looks at work by researchers at the Danish National Space Centre who investigate whether fluctuations in the intensity of cosmic radiation have any influence on our climate. It is known that high-energy particles from space stimulate cloud creation, which in turn has a cooling effect on Earth. Part of past climate variations might be explained by this mechanism.

While climate change is number one on the news agenda, itís not new on Earth. Our past has seen many climate variations, quite extreme at times, without any involvement of Man. These changes were caused by volcanic eruptions, meteorite impacts and even how Earth orbits around the Sun. Our knowledge of manmade climate change would not be complete without taking these natural causes into the equation.

Researchers at the Danish National Space Center in Copenhagen have established a link between the amount of cosmic particles coming from space and changes in our planet's weather.... ... possibly adding another dimension to climate research.
