Egnos air traffic navigation - field trials in France
Egnos, the European overlay system on GPS, will make satellite navigation safe enough for use in commercial air traffic navigation. The system is now nearing its certification, as part of which numerous field trials are done. One such trial, held in Limoges (France) under the auspices of the French civil aviation authority, was filmed for this TV Exchange, from the cockpit and at the ground.
When operational, Egnos will make notably aircraft landings safer at all airports without an ILS system, i.e. in most developing countries including favourite holiday destinations.

The cockpit of an ATR 42 on approach. No problem landing at the airport in Limoges. Yet this flight is special because the pilot has initiated the approach and landing using signals from space! In the Limousin sky the French Civil Aviation Control plane passed back and forth over the runway to test the new procedures based on the EGNOS system, guided by signals transmitted by satellites These test flights demonstrated the possibilities offered by EGNOS, the first European satellite navigation service, launched by the European Space Agency, the European Commission and Eurocontrol. EGNOS is made up of a network of around forty reference stations distributed between more than 20 countries. These stations collect the signals transmitted by GPS satellites and transmit them to comp
