Space and ground observatories working together
Using telescopes above the veil of Earths atmosphere, space-borne astronomy has greatly increased our knowledge of the Universe. However, ground-based observatories still have a major role to play. Situated at the top of Cerro Paranal, the VLT is the worlds highest optical observatory and one of the most powerful.
