The dark side of Space
Resolving the mysteries of the universe is one of the objective of ESA Space science missions.
One big mystery is represented by what can be called the dark side of space: pitch blackness which is indeed the dominating component of our universe, made up of dark energy, dark matter and the famous black holes.
Thanks to the observations of different telescopes like ESA XMM Newton or Hubble astronomers now have a better understanding of these phenomenae.. and soon the ESA Planck observatory will complement these views on the invisible.

For billions of years, the matter which later formed our galaxy - like countless others - existed in pitch blackness.
Black is still the dominating component of our universe, which is made up of 75% dark energy, 21% dark matter, black holes (representing an unknown small percentage) and stars, which produce the light in our universe but make up only about half a % of its total energy density.
So the dark side is the key component of our universe.
To mark this year of astronomy three European specialists shed some light on the matter
