      Herschel
""Looking into the cold Universe to understand the birth of stars and galaxies""
      Format 16:9
The most important space science mission for the European Space Agency and for Ariane is in the last phase of preparation for launch. Due to lift off from French Guiana on May 14, the flight will be orbiting two observatories, Herschel and Planck.
Herschel will carry the largest, most powerful infrared telescope ever flown in space. A pioneering mission to study the origin and evolution of stars and galaxies, it will help understand how the Universe came to be what it is today.
This A & B-Roll details the scientific objectives of the mission and includes interviews in English and in French with astrophysicists and cosmologists who will be using Herschel.

The Herschel Space Observatory is without doubt one of most impressive spacecraft ever built. With its telescope, the largest ever flown in space and its unique ability to cover a wide range of the infrared spectrum, it will be the first to study the earliest phases in the formation of stars and galaxies.
      10:01:04
Following in the footsteps of ESAís ISO infrared space observatory, the mission has taken ten years to develop. It is named after the 18th Century astronomer William Herschel who discovered infrared light which our eyes cannot see but which pervades the Universe.
      10:01:24
The spacecraft is more than 7 metres in length, about 4 metres wide, but its dominant feature is the telescope with a 3.5 metre diameter primary mirror, four times bigger than any previous infrared space telescope.
      10:01:39
Herschel will let astronomers probe the cold regions and objects of the Universe
