- Description
The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) is the first pan-European system for satellite navigation. As an augmentation of the US GPS system, it is suitable for critical applications such as aviation. Since EGNOS was declared available for aviation use in March 2011, it has been used for safety-critical tasks such as aircraft guidance and for positioning, horizontally and vertically, during landings.
The advances delivered by EGNOS have led to wider coverage of air traffic, as well as improving safety. It has also meant that landings can be achieved successfully in bad weather conditions, and has increased the efficiency of flight planning.
