The first satellite to carry a new laser communications system is ready for launch.

The Eutelsat 9B satellite, due to be launched on a Proton rocket from Baikonur in Kazakhstan on 29 January is fitted with the first terminal in the European Data Relay System – EDRS.

This innovative European-designed technology will enable high-speed communications between spacecraft in orbit, proving a wide range of new applications.
