In 2002 ESA's Space Science Programme sees the preparation for the launch of four exciting missions.
10:00:47
The biggest of the four missions, Rosetta, is actually due for launch in the first days of 2003, but 2002 will see extensive testing of the spacecraft, transport to Kourou and preparation for launch on Ariane.
10:01:00
Rosetta, planned by ESA to provide a better understanding of the history of our solar system and clues to the origin of life, is named after the Rosetta stone that provided the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs.
10:01:12
This spacecraft is one of the most elaborate missions to explore our solar system. After launch it will begin an eight-year journey, during which it will encounter two asteroids.
10:01:22
Its main goal is a rendezvous with comet 46 P/Wirtanen. Rosetta will study the comet and its environment for two years, observing the surface and emissions in fine detail from about 1km. A lander module will attempt to attach itself to the comets surface eq
