EARTHVIEW STORY II : THE GLOBAL EYE
SCRIPT
This program will show images produced using instrumental data, which is invisible to the naked eye or optical lens, but which satellite instruments can measure, record and convert to a form which enables us to see far beyond an optical image.
START PROGRAM : TC 10.00.00
Since 1960s satellites have carried passive instruments which can measure non-visible elements such as water vapour and surface water temperatures.

Measuring the reflection or absorption of sunlight by specific molecules is key to this technique.

The generation of satellites which have followed the launch of ERS1 in 1991 carry an even more sophisticated array of instruments. Now radar's, radar altimeters, scatterometers and interferometers enable scientists to examine both the earth and the atmosphere in ever increasing detail. Darkness or cloud cover pose no obstacle to these instruments.
