A brand new generation of European weather satellites is about to be launched - for the first time in 25 years. Meteosat Second Generation - or MSG - has been equipped with the latest technology for highly accurate weather forecasting and climate research.
MSG's predecessor, Meteosat, has been watching over the Earth since the late 70s. Orbiting 36,000 kilometres above the equator, these pioneering European satellites have today delivered over a million weather reports - one every half hour.
Now MSG is set to take weather forecasting to the next level. The cutting-edge design of its instruments will give meteorologists more data with an accuracy 20 times that of its predecessors. This will be used in a wide range of applications, ranging from commercial uses to ensuring public safety.
