The STS-100 mission, due for launch on 19 April 2001, will take to the International Space Station the Canadian robotic arm and the Italian built Multi-Purpose Logistsic Module Raffaello. On board this mission will be Italian ESA Astronaut, Umberto Guidonid, who will become the first European astronaut to visit the ISS.

The Canadian robotic arm is accompanying the European logistics module to the Station. It will be attached to the US DESTINY laboratory in two space walks. The arm will eventually be able to move along special rails covering the length of the Station. On its first mission, the Italian-built Raffaello module will deliver racks of instruments and other equipment for the Station. It will be put back into the cargo bay for the Shuttle's trip home using the Shuttle's robotic arm. Mission STS-100 is a highly complex technical operation.

""For the first time we have to co-ordinate the motion of this arm that is on the Shuttle with this arm that is on the station. So it will be really a new operation all together. That will need a particular synchronisation between what we are doing on the Shuttle and what the other operator on the station is do
