Big Data for ESA
ESA generates and collects vast amounts of valuable research data every year. These data come from projects, programmes, satellites, the ISS, missions and many other sources. Keeping these records for future generations, as a record of Earth and space as we know them, and to leverage them with new technologies, is an important mission for the whole of ESA as well as for the IT Department.
To securely manage this data, the IT Department had to develop its own private cloud. This is a move towards technology at the forefront of the market. The esacloud was developed to the high security and redundancy standards required by ESA.
We have also expanded into virtualised computing, improving access, efficiency and security for ESA and its Member States. Our cloud computing and virtualisation responsibilities include:
- Computing facilities: data centre and cloud server infrastructure, storage and back-up solutions,
- IT security and protection measures (including authentication and access control) in line with the corporate security policies and directives.
