Four test patients suffering from terminal cardiac failure will soon receive artificial hearts from the French company Carmat, now approved for human trials in France. Brainchild of the cardiac surgeon Professor Alain Carpentier, the prosthetic is the result of 15 years of collaboration with aerospace giant Astrium, the space subsidiary of EADS.
