Jakobshavn Glacier, Greenland

Greenland’s numerous glaciers drain ice from the central ice sheet, such as the Jakobshavn Glacier visible at the bottom of this image. Some 35 billion tonnes of ice calve off and pass out of the fjord as icebergs every year. Jakobshavn’s rapidly retreating front illustrates the effect that warming temperatures have on the Greenland ice sheet.
