    • Description

SISnet is an innovative system to put the full power of satellite navigation at the disposal of everybody with access to the Internet. The SISnet information includes the corrective data for the GPS satellite navigation system to make it accurate to about two metres. This data is broadcast by the European EGNOS transponders using several geostationary satellites, along with other data to improve the availability and integrity of the GPS system.
However, the EGNOS satellite signals are sometimes difficult to receive, notably in the Nordic countries and in the centre of towns. Here SISnet comes into play by providing this information via the Internet, using, for example, a mobile GSM connection from a handheld navigation terminal. The SISnet technology was developed in Finland under ESA contract.
This programme includes images of the SISnet terminal and trials in a car, as well as soundbites by technical experts from ESA and the Finnish company responsible for the development.

Trying to find you way, in let's say the woods of Finland? No problem at all with this handset: the SISNET receiver. This new device is a precursor to what we'll all have in our hands in the future: mobile phone combined with pocket PC and a navigation receiver. SISNet - Signal in space through Internet - is a new approace to satellite navigation, with a new technology developed by ESA, the European Space Agency. And the receiver? It was created by Rhuizi Chen on a contract with ESA, focusing on the use of the internet for satellite positioning data.

It is here in FGI, the Finnish Geodesic Institute, that the first Sisnet receiver was developed. The main idea is to obtain posistion ing data from the Internet with what is called EGNOS, the European Global Overlay Service. EGNOS is the first step in Europe towards a navigation system, paving the way for Galileo. Currently in the test bed phase, this augmentation signal to GPS, gives alread
