Afsluitdijk, the Netherlands

The Afsluitdijk has been protecting the Netherlands from the sea for more than eighty years. However, as a result of climate change, sea-level is rising and extreme weather is expected to occur more frequently. The dyke is therefore having to be strengthened along its entire length and all of its components have to be reinforced. The Netherlands is fortunately in a position to invest hugely in sea defence.
