In 1986 the French-Russian VEGA mission passed by Venus and released a probe. For the first and only time in history, two balloons were inflated in the atmosphere of another planet to collect scientific data. Hoetjes takes this relatively unknown moment in history as a starting point for a new speculative piece exploring ideas of fictional female space travellers. The balloon carries speculative instruments that closely resemble the original instruments on the VEGA mission from the 1980s, but also refer to the technique of spectroscopy as used by 19th century female astronomers.
