Clean water is essential for life, both on Earth and in space. ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen setup the Aquamembrane-3 experiment on the International Space Station during his Huginn mission. The experiment will test the efficiency and water quality of the membrane, to identify the right size, flow speed and other parameters for a fully operational prototype. The membrane is built using small proteins that mimic the same proteins, called aquaporins, found in both plants and kidneys.
