Clean water is essential for life, both on Earth and in space. This is the membrane behind the Aquamembrane-3 experiment with the membrane, on top in light blue, built using small proteins that mimic the same proteins, called aquaporins, found in both plants and kidneys. Underneath the membrane is a support structure.
The experiment will test the efficiency and water quality of the membrane, to identify the right size, flow speed and other parameters for a fully operational prototype, that could be used for clean water both in space and on Earth.
