This video of the aurora borealis was captured by the Fast Auroral Imager, which is part of the e-POP instrument package carried on Canada’s Cassiope satellite. Launched in 2013, Cassiope/e-POP mission focuses on space weather-related research in the polar areas. Through ESA’s Third Party Mission programme and thanks to international collaboration, e-POP is now part of the Swarm mission. By integrating e-POP into the Swarm constellation will open up a host of new scientific investigations into magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling, including Earth’s magnetic field and related current systems, upper-atmospheric dynamics and aurora dynamics.
