N° 49–2022: Invitation to Media: ESA Open Day 2022 at ESTEC

28 September 2022

Journalists are invited to attend ESTEC’s Open Day this coming Sunday, 2 October. Located in Noordwijk, Netherlands, and counting over 3000 staff and contractors, ESTEC is ESA’s technical heart, and the place where missions are designed, tested, and brought to life. ESA’s technical centre will be open to the public this Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, and visitors will be able to learn more about ESA’s activities, meet astronauts and space scientists, and find out about everything that happens at ESTEC.

With activities planned throughout the day, the event will be headlined by talks from German ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer and Dutch ESA astronaut André Kuipers, as well as the attendance of ESA’s Director General Josef Aschbacher. ESTEC will also exhibit a dedicated ‘NL Space’ tent, where a number of Dutch space companies and institutions developing some very exciting projects - such as Tropomi, a world-class instrument to observe climate change and air pollution from space – will be presenting their cutting-edge work.

This year’s event will follow the theme of “Accelerating Space” and will serve as both the conclusion of The Space Week - which sees eight days of activities across The Netherlands – and as part of the Dutch Science Weekend. ESTEC’s visitor centre, Space Expo, will also be hosting a day-long space festival to celebrate space exploration as well as the art, music, and culture that stems from it.

Media attendees will have the opportunity throughout the event to interview select spokespersons, as well as to attend talks and presentations by ESA astronauts, space scientists, and engineers. Journalists will be able to meet the teams behind some of the most exciting ESA initiatives and will have a chance to visit ESTEC’s laboratories, as well as hear about ESA’s missions from the talented experts that are making them happen.
