During his internship within the Spaceship EAC team, Sebastian Rohde worked on a method for extracting oxygen from lunar regolith, or moon dust, at ESA's Astronaut Centre in Cologne. By adding lunar regolith to a special ionic liquid, an electrolysis process is initiated that extracts the oxygen and other metals. Electrochemical measurements are set up to investigate the mixture of ionic liquid and regolith and its regeneration for repeated use.
