This Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) shows Montserrat, the 102 sq km island, dependency of the UK. Montserrat is one of the Lesser Antilles, situated northwest of Guadaloupe (just visible in the southeast of the image) .
The mountainous island's highest peak if the Soufriere Hills Volcano (914 m), is clearly visible occupying most of the south of the island. The volcano was dormant for years before starting to rumble in 1995, these minor eruptions continued until 1997 when things came to a head. The volcano erupted violently a number of times that year particularly on June 25 th , killing 19 people.
